let's go become to sandy real quick. still a hurricane. category one hurricane. maximum winds 80 miles per hour moving off to the northwest at 13. so remains intact. you can see the satellite signature not as impressive as it was 24 hours ago when it was emerging off the coast of cuba but this is still a very strong storm and as it pushes to the north and west, it is forecast to interact with what we call a little short wave, some much colder air and as it does so, that will reenergize as it gets up into the mid-atlantic. that is why we're concerned. time frame for us as the storm gets closer will be the second half of sunday, monday and tuesday. we'll be just fine today. we'll have no issues tomorrow. this will be the second half of sunday, monday and tuesday when things will start to fall apart. that will be gusty wind around here, likely locally very heavy rain as well. let's do some local forecasting as well. we're doing fine this morning.

mix of hurricane and winter storm. although the murk is projected to make landfall along the new york-new jersey shore on tuesday, the d.c. area will feel the effects in the coming days with the possibility of hurricane force wind and heavy surf already being felt along parts of the u.s. as sandy barrels her way towards the region. >> we are looking for tropical storm-force winds along the coast beginning tonight and dangerous surf conditions over the next couple of days. we can't emphasize enough to keep people out of the water. the wind will be very strong. you will have lots of people affected. just a big mess for an awful lot of people. >> reporter: now, as sandy churns off the coast and heads up to the d.c. region, people are bracing for whatever she may bring and, of course, the big concern, power outages. power companies are making preparations for hundreds of thousands of potential outages

models and a live chat and more as well. well. . police in leesburg say they are looking into a suspicious death they learned about overnight woman in her early 20s was up for inside her apartment around 1:00 this morning. police say they were contacted by relatives of the woman who had not been able to make contact with her for a few days. the unclear how the woman died. however, investigators say there is no threat to the public. also making headlines, in prince george's county a prick county jury finds a former fbi agent guilty on all -- a prince george's county jury find a former fbi agent guilty on call counts. he was found guilty for crashing into lawrence garner's vehicle and killing him and seriously injuring his best

friend. and a legendary swim coach is under arrest accused of sexually abusing one of his students decades ago. a now 43-year-old woman came forward and said rick curl sexually abused her when she was 13. curl was released on bond. he faces a preliminary hearing on a felony charge in november. president obama is back at the white house after a blistering two days hitting several battleground states. he is staying in town attending a democratic committee meeting at the national headquarter in the district and taping a few interviews, one for mtv. mitt romney is in iowa today for what his campaign is calling a major speech on the economy this afternoon in ames. the president also made history yesterday. he cast his vote in chicago becoming the first sitting president to do so before election day. after he cast his ballot, he joked that he can't say who he voted for. i think we know that.

. a new suicide bombing this week. 35 people are dead and 07 injured in northern afghanistan in what is described as the deadliest attack in months i'm bomber targeted a mosque at the start of a muslim holiday. a doctor on the scene says bodies are everywhere. we are learning that the taliban taking responsibility for yesterday's insider attack that killed two american soldiers. the nationwide meningitis outbreak continues to grow. the cdc says another person died in indiana bringing the death toll to 24 now. south carolina is reporting its first probable case while virginia, michigan and new jersey also have some new cases. overall, 328 people in 18 states have now been infected.

the outbreak was caused by injects of tainted steroid medication. two teenaged brothers in new jersey accused of murdering a young girl are due in court later today. a judge will decide whether justice tip and dante robinson should remain in jail or be released to their parents. the two are accused of killing 12-year-old anna pasquale. a warning for residents. keep a close eye on your car. we are not talking about grand theft auto here but cars set on fire. >> nearly a dozen all in the same day. we'll get the latest on the police investigation and of course our big story, hurricane sandy. tucker is tracking the storm and julie checks our friday morning commute. stay with us. we'll be right back.

. welcome back to the fox 5 morning news. that is a live look outside right now at the wilson bridge. it is 5:15 in the morning. speaking of time, it is almost time for the marine corps marathon. it is on this sunday. there are events today and tomorrow leading up toit. over 100,000 people will visit the health and fitness expo at the d.c. armory today. tomorrow, there is a 5k run from the national mall. the big race is set for sunday morning. >> i'll be out there later on at the finish line. we are going to have a preview. we'll talk to the director of the race and they have some new

across eastern pennsylvania and much of maryland and virginia here. that is that fog that i mentioned and we've got an easterly flow here. our wind are out of the east pushing across the ocean. that is why we have this little maritime layer and it will keep temperatures realtively cool. that is a cold front out in indiana. that will be player in our forecast as we get into the weekend. we are concerned about hurricane sandy. maximum winds 58 miles per hour with sandy here as it pushes off to the north and west at about 13 right now t remains a very formidable hurricane, very powerful. they've got tropical storm warning and watches extending up into the carolinas now. this will continue to track often for the north and north and west over the next couple of days. i think our weather will start to break down during the day on sunday. we'll probably start to get some rain showers in here and then the main event as it were would likely occur during the day on monday and tuesday. just look at the latest guidance. it looks a little more ominous

for us. i want to emphasize that this track could change. it has changed several times in the past southeasterly days so nothing is set in stone here. but. -- it has changed several times in the past several days so nothing is set in stone here. saturday at 5:00, notice the storm still to our south. that is the cold front that. cold air, when it interacts with this tropical air will energy the system right where we don't want it to. watch the motion here. we are sunday morning at 11:00. starting to get the bands of rain. notice the eye, the center of circulation still well to our south. and as i mentioned, the latest guidance is trying to put the center right up to the bay of delaware here early monday into tuesday and that would be very problem at being for us. that would mean lots and lots of heavy rain and gusty wind around here. it could still be a category one hurricane or at least the

equist lent at landfall. there could be some 70-mile an hour wind gust as long the shore by early monday. 7 1-rbg early clouds and fog today. -- 71, early clouds and fog today. let me mention the cool temperature with the rain and wind and highs only in the upper 40s to about 50 monday and tuesday. this could be some very heavy rain. lots of question marks. things could change here that. track could change. but definitely want to keep in mind here we could be dealing with a pretty good storm by monday and tuesday. let's do some traffic and say happy friday to julie. >> all right. sound like you got your work cut out for you. right now around the highways, you will fine lanes are open, no problems reported to and from the wilson bridge. overnight construction has cleared for those continuing on the beltway between annandale and springfield. we do have roadwork in operation so the construction will tie up both north and southbound 286 at rugby road. that is scheduled until about

6:00 this morning. so make note of that. no problems reported right know northbound on i-95. had accident activity southbound in lorton. all of that should now be cleared to the shoulder. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. etraffic. . >> thank you. police in prince george's county are on the hunt for a possible serial arsonist. >> bob barnard has the reaction from the victims who are contused and angry that there maw be a firebug on the loose. >> reporter: the string of arsons began early wednesday morning and continued for almost 24 hours. one by one, the arsonist torched cars in kettering and upper marine layer pro. - - upper marlboro. we spoke with two victims.

her -- barreling her way towards the east coast. our area utility companies are also preparing for sandy. both pepco and bg & e are planning for hundreds of thousands of potential outages. that is not good. workers are now on stand-by. pepco says they have 400 contractors ready plus an additional 150 holiday crews and bg & e says they have 500 contractors. so already getting ready for the power outages. >> yeah. one of the big issues will be that the wind field will expand as the storm gets closer. i'm afraid the damage will be widespread. remember with the derecho, it was fairly localized t could be here up to new york city, out to the west y you said in this area, at this point, you didn't think we would get hurricane force wind? >> i don't think it is likely we'll get hurricane force wind here in the immediate metro area but we could get close.

monday and tuesday. this is your tropical satellite. still a hurricane. hurricane sandy, maximum wind 08 miles per hour pushing off to the northwest. the wind field has been expanding over the last several hours. that is not a great sign because i mentioned earlier the damage with our derecho for instance in june, remember the thunderstorm complex we had come blue. that was fairly localized. this one will be a big event. it will be likely tomorrow pact several big cities, not just washington but likely philadelphia and new york as well. here is your latest tracker here. again, category one hurricane. 968millibars. watch the movement. suddenly, it gets pulledded in -- pulled in by the cold front i showed you. the latest guidance points day little further so the south and closer to washington. look how close that is to the bay of delaware. if this track were to verify, this would be a very serious storm for us by the day on
